Szybowice Wind Farm Nears Completion with 37.4 MW Capacity

The Szybowice wind farm in Opolskie, Poland, is nearing the final stages of construction, with the installation of all 17 turbines completed. Each turbine has a capacity of 2.2 MW, bringing the total installed capacity to 37.4 MW. This project is a collaboration between Energi Green Development, part of the Orlen Group, Neo Energy Group, and ONDE.

Energa announced that the farm covers an area of approximately 900 hectares and is set to begin its technological startup phase soon. Once operational, the Szybowice wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power over 40,000 households annually.

This investment aligns with the Orlen Group’s energy transformation goals, which aim to achieve 12.8 GW of installed capacity from onshore and offshore renewable sources by 2035. Arkadiusz Bakierzyński, President of Energi Green Development, highlighted the importance of diversifying energy sources beyond solar energy. This diversification is essential for stabilizing the electricity system, which increasingly relies on weather conditions.

Bakierzyński noted, “Investments like the Szybowice wind farm are vital for decarbonizing Polish energy and enhancing the flexibility of the national energy mix.”

Currently, finishing touches are being applied to the wind farm to prepare it for the startup phase. Testing and operational trials of the turbines are expected to conclude in the third quarter of this year, with plans to obtain a usage permit by the fourth quarter of 2025.

In addition to the Szybowice project, Energa is also developing solar farms in Lower Silesia, including the Serby farm with a capacity of 112 MW, and the Kotla farm with a capacity of 130 MW. Energa Green Development acquired the Serby project in May 2023 and is working with Neo Energy Group and ONDE for its execution. The Kotla project was purchased from Lightsource BP in August 2024.

Energa states that it leads in the share of renewable energy sources in the total installed capacity of its production assets, achieving 53% by the end of 2024. This includes 350 MW from solar installations, 256 MW from wind farms, 202 MW from hydropower, and approximately 82 MW from biomass sources. In 2024, Energa’s renewable sources generated a total of 1.5 TWh of electricity, accounting for 55% of its total gross production during that period.

Energa’s distribution network spans 200,000 km, covering roughly a quarter of Poland and serving approximately 3.4 million customers. Since 2020, Energa has been part of the Orlen Group, which operates refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, alongside a network of fuel stations across several European countries. Orlen is also expanding its investments in oil and gas extraction, petrochemicals, and renewable energy, including plans for nuclear energy development using small modular reactors.
