ORLEN unveils first multifuel technology for hydrogen and gas

ORLEN Group has launched Multifuel, a groundbreaking technology that allows for the generation of electricity and heat using hydrogen, natural gas, or a mix of both. This innovative system is now entering commercial use, developed in collaboration with Horus Energia.

Multifuel offers a flexible solution for industrial users seeking to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce emissions without sacrificing operational flexibility. The system is compatible with large gas engines ranging from 300 kWel to 2 MWel and can be integrated into both new and existing energy generation units. It can enhance power efficiency by up to 5%.

The technology is suitable for various industrial applications, including energy hubs, local power clusters, electric vehicle charging stations, and public facilities that require stable or backup power. A key feature of Multifuel is its ability to switch fuels in real-time. The system utilizes independent supply lines for hydrogen and natural gas, managed by a smart control system that adjusts fuel ratios on the fly, ensuring continuous operation without reducing engine output.

Prototype tests demonstrate that blending hydrogen with natural gas can increase generation efficiency by more than 5% compared to traditional gas engines. This technology aligns with ORLEN’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and advancing the adoption of clean fuels within Poland’s economy.
