Orlen nears agreement for small modular nuclear reactors

Polish energy company Orlen announced it is close to finalizing an agreement with Synthos to jointly develop small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). Orlen’s CEO, Ireneusz Fąfara, expects the deal to be completed by the end of summer 2025.

Despite previous delays related to financing and technology access, the SMR project is advancing. Fąfara emphasized Orlen’s belief in SMR technology and the company’s commitment to meet the promises made by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, aiming to operationalize at least two reactors by 2035, potentially even sooner.

In addition to its nuclear ambitions, Orlen plans to expand its gas supply cooperation with Ukraine. The company has reported solid financial results, with a net profit of 5.932 billion PLN in the first half of 2025, an increase of over 3 billion PLN compared to the same period in 2024.

Orlen’s operational EBITDA LIFO reached 9.2 billion PLN in the second quarter, a strong performance amid challenging macroeconomic conditions. These robust financial results support Orlen’s ambitious investment plans, with nearly 14 billion PLN allocated to investments in the first half of the year, accounting for approximately 40% of their annual investment plan. The company has maintained its target of 35 billion PLN in total investments for 2025.

The development of SMRs and the expansion of gas cooperation with Ukraine reflect Orlen’s strategy to diversify its energy portfolio while enhancing energy security in the region.
