MERLIN, Carbon2Nature Launch 50-Year Reforestation Project

Carbon2Nature, a subsidiary of Iberdrola dedicated to reducing the global carbon footprint through nature-based solutions, has announced a partnership with MERLIN Properties to initiate the MERLIN Forest project in Serradilla del Llano, Salamanca. This innovative reforestation effort aims to restore 200 hectares impacted by one of the region’s most catastrophic wildfires.

The project involves planting over 300,000 native trees across 192 hectares, targeting the absorption of more than 160,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the next 50 years. This initiative marks a significant step in integrating ecological responsibility within the real estate sector. Carbon2Nature will manage the technical aspects, maintenance, and monitoring throughout the project’s lifespan, while MERLIN commits to stewardship of the forest for five decades.

Located near the Las Batuecas – Sierra de Francia Natural Park, the MERLIN Forest will function as a natural carbon sink, contributing to biodiversity, supporting local pollinators, enhancing soil health, and conserving water resources. The project has received certification under Spain’s official carbon absorption standards, ensuring its credibility and effectiveness in combating climate change.

This collaboration between private entities exemplifies how focused investment in reforestation can yield substantial ecological benefits and help mitigate the effects of climate change. By committing to long-term environmental stewardship, MERLIN and Carbon2Nature set a precedent for future projects that prioritize sustainability and ecological restoration.
