I4B invests €30 million in 600MWh battery storage in Belgium

I4B, the Belgian Infrastructure Fund, has announced a €30 million investment in a major battery energy storage project in Visé, Belgium. This facility, with a capacity of 600MWh, aims to enhance the stability of Belgium’s electricity grid and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, supporting the country’s decarbonization goals.

Developed in collaboration with Luminus, the battery storage system is designed to address energy security and grid balancing challenges. André Autrand, CEO of I4B, emphasized the project’s importance for Belgian households and industries, stating that it will help manage fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, particularly from variable renewable sources like solar and wind.

The battery park will provide essential grid-balancing services, allowing for more efficient management of energy peaks. This initiative aligns with I4B’s strategy to invest in low-carbon infrastructure and complements its existing portfolio of solar and onshore wind projects.

Samuel de Lhoneux, I4B’s Chief Investment Officer, highlighted the project’s scale and impact, noting that it reflects the fund’s capacity to execute large projects in collaboration with industry leaders. I4B’s expertise in financial structuring has been key to establishing a strong partnership with Luminus.

This investment represents a significant step toward improving Belgium’s energy resilience and advancing the country’s renewable energy objectives.
