Egypt, GEIDCO Explore Global Power Grid Expansion

Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, recently met with Liu Zhenya, Chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), to discuss strategies for expanding global power interconnection projects. This meeting occurred during the Shanghai Conference on Renewable Energy, Clean Energy Solutions, and Energy Transition in China.

The discussions focused on increasing the use of clean energy sources to meet growing electricity demands, aligning efforts with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Esmat and the GEIDCO delegation explored potential partnerships aimed at optimizing renewable energy utilization, enhancing energy efficiency, and advancing electricity interconnection initiatives.

Esmat highlighted GEIDCO’s role in promoting smart grids and supporting capacity building in developing nations. The conversation included ambitious plans to connect electricity networks across Asia, Africa, and Europe. They also discussed the establishment of an alliance aimed at fostering electricity interconnection and sustainable development specifically within Africa.

Additionally, the talks addressed the transfer of expertise in energy storage, improving cross-continental infrastructure, accelerating the rollout of clean energy distribution projects, and promoting collaborative development efforts.

Esmat emphasized that interconnection projects with neighboring countries form a fundamental component of Egypt’s strategy to strengthen its power grid and establish the country as a regional energy hub. This initiative aims to link energy markets across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
