EDP launches largest solar park in Romania with 60 MW capacity

EDP Renewables has officially opened the Albina photovoltaic power plant, marking its largest solar installation in Romania. This facility, located approximately 9 kilometers from Timișoara in western Romania, represents a significant investment in the country’s renewable energy sector and will be operational by the end of 2024.

The Albina solar park has an installed capacity of 60 MWp (48.8 MWac) and is projected to generate about 67 GWh of solar energy annually. This output is sufficient to power nearly 40,000 households in Romania, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by over 33,000 tonnes each year. Such production levels align with EDP’s strategy to promote a cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy landscape in Romania.

The inauguration ceremony saw attendance from several notable figures, including Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, Minister of Energy, and Alin Popoviciu, Vice President of the Timis County Council. Minister Burduja emphasized the importance of the project, stating that it reflects investors’ confidence in Romania’s market stability and its capacity for growth. He stated, “The energy produced by this solar park is green, locally sourced, and affordable, which means reduced reliance on imports and lower market prices.”

Andrei Rapeanu, Country Manager for EDP in Romania, highlighted that the Albina project marks a new phase for EDP in the country, showcasing the company’s commitment to advancing the transition towards sustainable energy. With this new plant, EDP strengthens its position in Romania, where it operates various wind and solar projects totaling over 570 MW of installed capacity.

This investment supports Romania’s updated climate goals as part of the European Union’s Fit for 55 initiative, which aims to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 57% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The country also aims for a 45% share of renewable energy in its gross final energy consumption. Projects like Albina are essential for Romania to meet these targets effectively and sustainably.

EDP is focused on expanding its footprint in Europe by targeting markets with high renewable energy potential and aligning its operations with EU climate commitments.
