DHL Group has finalized a long-term electricity supply agreement with EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg, securing approximately 80 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually starting in 2026. This contract aligns with DHL’s decarbonization goals, contributing to its target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in logistics by 2050.
The electricity will be sourced from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm located in the German North Sea. He Dreiht is set to begin operations in stages, with full commissioning expected by spring 2026. The power purchase agreement (PPA) spans ten years and will supply about 16% of DHL’s current annual electricity needs in Germany.
Anna Spinelli, Chief Procurement Officer at DHL Group, emphasized the importance of smart energy management in reaching sustainability targets. She stated, “This agreement with EnBW ensures a dependable supply of renewable energy for our operations and supports the broader energy transition. Proactive supplier relationships like this example contribute to a more sustainable ecosystem.”
Matthias Obert, Executive Director of Trading at EnBW, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its role in promoting zero-emission logistics. He noted that PPAs are effective tools for advancing industrial decarbonization while also providing necessary financing for energy projects.
The He Dreiht offshore wind farm is notable for being one of the first in Europe constructed without government subsidies. Once operational, it will significantly boost EnBW’s renewable energy generation capacity, utilizing 64 Vestas V236-15 turbines, each rated at 15 megawatts. With a total capacity of 960 megawatts, He Dreiht is projected to supply renewable energy to approximately 1.1 million households.
This collaboration not only marks a pivotal moment for DHL Group’s sustainability efforts but also reinforces EnBW’s position as a leading provider of sustainable energy in Europe.
