Bozankaya, a Turkish manufacturer, has entered into a contract with Polish firm Medcom to provide silicon carbide (SiC)-based traction systems for trams and metro trains. This agreement covers components for 73 trams and 100 metro cars, intended for deployment in Serbia, Romania, Turkey, and Italy. Deliveries are already in progress for vehicles in Belgrade and Iași.
The contract specifies the production of 25 five-section trams for Belgrade, 18 three-section trams for Iași, and 10 seven-section units for Samsun, along with up to 20 five-section vehicles for Naples. Each of these vehicles will utilize new power modules sourced from Poland.
Bozankaya’s collaboration with Medcom is not new; the Polish company previously supplied components for trams built for Kayseri and Antalya. This ongoing partnership has fostered a strong relationship between the two companies, facilitating this latest agreement.
The use of SiC technology is expected to improve the efficiency of the trams, aligning with Bozankaya’s goal to implement modern solutions that reduce energy consumption and enhance reliability. This is particularly important for emerging markets in Eastern and Southern Europe, where such advancements can drive growth.
In addition to its international ventures, Bozankaya has also signed an agreement with Aselsan, a Turkish defense electronics firm, to develop and manufacture traction systems locally. This initiative marks the introduction of domestically produced components, supporting Turkey’s industrial capabilities and diminishing reliance on imports.
Bozankaya aims to strike a balance between global partnerships and local manufacturing, as it seeks to expand its footprint in the railway transport sector. This dual approach not only strengthens local industry but also enhances the company’s competitive position in the international market.
