BW ESS, a global leader in energy storage solutions, has partnered with Spanish company Ibersun to develop 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Spain. This collaboration aims to create a pipeline of eight projects designed to enhance Spain’s energy storage capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The joint venture plans to focus on greenfield sites with a four-hour duration for the battery systems. Both companies will share ownership equally, and they expect that each project will attain Ready-to-Build status within two years, with completion planned for mid-2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Isaac Garcia Moreno, Executive Director of BW ESS, emphasized the importance of this venture in improving Spain’s grid resilience and meeting the nation’s ambitious energy storage goals. He noted that the growing demand for energy storage in Spain is driven by an increase in renewable energy generation from solar and wind sources, as well as the limitations of interconnectivity with neighboring European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan sets a target of 22.5 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030. The expansion of battery storage capacity is essential not only for stabilizing the energy grid but also for maximizing the use of renewable energy, preventing waste during periods of surplus supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
