French Hydrogen Firms Expand Global Reach with New Deals

In July 2025, French hydrogen companies are actively engaging in international business development, highlighting partnerships with 17 countries including Brazil, Canada, China, and the United States. This month, 21 French stakeholders, including major players like Air Liquide, EDF, and TotalEnergies, are making strides in hydrogen production and technology.

In the Netherlands, Air Liquide’s ELYgator project has been selected as one of 11 initiatives to receive funding under a €700 million subsidy program aimed at hydrogen production through electrolysis. The project will have a capacity of 200 MW and produce 23,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually starting in 2027, with an investment exceeding €500 million. TotalEnergies has already signed a supply agreement for the hydrogen produced.

Elogen is also contributing to the Netherlands’ hydrogen landscape with the delivery of a 2.5 MW PEM electrolyser to the Baseload Power Hub project. This electrolyser will be integrated into a collaborative innovation center in Eemshaven.

In Germany, Air Liquide has secured a multi-year contract to supply renewable hydrogen to H2 Mobility’s stations in the Rhine-Ruhr area, committing to deliver up to 1,000 tonnes per year from its Trailblazer electrolyser in Oberhausen.

Meanwhile, in Tianjin, China, Air Liquide has launched a hydrogen supply base, converting industrial by-products into 3,000 tonnes of high-purity hydrogen annually.

The UK government has finalized support contracts for 10 hydrogen projects, including the Tees Green hydrogen project led by EDF and Hynamics, which will begin construction this year and aim to start operations in 2026. The project will kick off with a 7.5 MW capacity and plans to expand to 100 MW in a second phase.

Lhyfe, another French company, has concluded a citizen financing campaign, raising €2.5 million for four renewable hydrogen production sites, including one in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. Additionally, Lhyfe received planning permission for a 20 MW site in Wallsend, UK, capable of producing nearly 3,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually.

In Morocco, TotalEnergies is advancing the Chbika renewable hydrogen project with partners Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and A.P. Moddel Capital. The initiative aims to establish 1 GW of solar and wind capacity for hydrogen production, which will be converted into renewable ammonia for the European market.

Hynamics and Hy24 have signed a memorandum of understanding to finance the £300 million Fawley Green Hydrogen project, which involves a 120 MW electrolyser intended to decarbonize the ExxonMobil refinery in the UK.

In Brazil, Qair and Mingyang Hydrogen Technology have entered into a cooperation agreement for the H2Brasil project in Ceará, involving the supply of electrolysis units with a total capacity of 20 MW.

In Saudi Arabia, ACWA Power has signed a multi-party memorandum of understanding with European companies, including TotalEnergies, to develop a hydrogen export value chain to Europe.

On the mobility front, Pragma Industries has made strides in Poland and Chile by delivering hydrogen-powered bicycles and refueling stations. In the UK, HRS has plans for a hydrogen refueling station in Glasgow, further expanding its network of stations.

In Taiwan, EODev provided a hydrogen generator to restore power after a typhoon, demonstrating the technology’s utility in emergency recovery.

As research initiatives continue, Emmanuel Macron announced a joint laboratory between CNRS and Imperial College London to focus on optimizing large-scale renewable hydrogen production.

Overall, the developments this month illustrate a robust international engagement by French hydrogen companies, with investments and projects spanning multiple continents, reinforcing their commitment to advancing the hydrogen economy.
