Polish Energy Networks Complete 400 kV Line in Lower Silesia

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) has completed a key energy project in Lower Silesia with the construction of the new 400 kV Mikułowa – Świebodzice transmission line. This infrastructure project comes as a replacement for the outdated 220 kV line, significantly enhancing the region’s power supply reliability and efficiency.

The new line spans 110 kilometers and includes 271 transmission towers, supporting a total of 1,340 kilometers of phase wires. The construction utilized over 6,000 tons of structural steel and 10,000 cubic meters of concrete, alongside the installation of 65,000 insulators.

Włodzimierz Mucha, Vice President of PSE, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment, stating that the new line will ensure stable electricity supply in the region and strengthen the reliability of the National Power System.

The project involved a workforce of over 220 professionals, including engineers, technicians, and construction workers, reflecting the scale and complexity of the undertaking. Bernadetta Czerska from PSE noted that building high-voltage lines represents one of the most intricate types of infrastructure investments, requiring extensive coordination across various project phases, including environmental assessments, regulatory approvals, and construction logistics.

Collaboration with multiple institutions, local authorities, and property owners was essential at every stage, necessitating detailed agreements and formal decisions. Czerska highlighted that managing these relationships was critical for meeting the legal and environmental requirements of the project.

Additionally, the project employed numerous subcontractors, which demanded precise management of time and resources. PSE took the initiative to purchase components independently to optimize costs and expedite the delivery of necessary equipment.

Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain uncertainties, and limited direct communication with stakeholders, the project maintained its timeline and met all key deadlines. The construction work was executed by a consortium of GRINEA and PBE ELBUD Warszawa Sp. z o.o., selected through a public tender process.

This new transmission line not only modernizes the local power infrastructure but sets a benchmark for efficiency and reliability, laying a solid foundation for the future energy development of the region.
