Nextracker, a leading provider of solar tracking systems, will deploy its NX Horizon™ solar trackers at the 550 MW Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida solar photovoltaic (PV) park in Western Macedonia, Greece. This installation, one of the largest solar power projects in Europe, is owned by PPC Renewables, a subsidiary of the PPC Group, and developed by Terna SA.
Situated on reclaimed land from a former coal mine, the solar park aims to produce clean energy and is nearing completion. Once operational, it will be the largest standalone solar facility in Greece, generating approximately 1.8% of the country’s annual electricity requirements.
This project aligns with the European Union’s commitment to renewable energy and supports Greece’s updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which targets 82% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, up from 66% in 2019. Large-scale developments like Oricheio PPC Ptolemaida are crucial in advancing energy independence and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 within the EU.
In addition to environmental advantages, the solar park is expected to boost local economies by creating jobs and revitalizing areas previously reliant on fossil fuel industries. Howard Wenger, president of Nextracker, emphasized the project’s importance for energy independence in Europe and highlighted the collaboration with Terna SA and PPC.
Nextracker has shipped over 130 GW of solar trackers globally and has established itself as a market leader in Europe, as reported by Wood Mackenzie. To meet the growing demand, Nextracker has expanded its European operations and strengthened partnerships with local manufacturing firms, ensuring timely delivery of equipment for both large-scale and distributed generation projects.
