The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) has authorized the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) to develop and manage large-scale energy storage systems integrated into the national electricity grid. This decision allows TSOC to install battery storage facilities at three substations: Athalassa (40MW/80MWh), Free Industrial Zone (40MW/160MWh), and Eastern (40MW/160MWh).
These projects aim to bolster grid stability and support renewable energy producers by minimizing the risk of curtailment. CERA has granted TSOC ownership and management rights for these storage systems, bypassing a competitive contracting process, provided that TSOC retains ownership.
The installations are required to be completed by June 2026 and will be prioritized for grid services. This initiative follows a special exemption outlined in the European Union Directive (EU) 2024/1711, which has been recognized by Cyprus law, highlighting the pressing need for reliable energy storage capacity in the region.
CERA also indicated that while TSOC moves forward with these projects, there will be ample opportunities for private investors in energy storage. Details of the decision will be made publicly available on CERA’s website and shared with government officials.
